Director of Teaching and Learning– Boon C. Boonyapat

Boon C. Boonyapat was born and raised in Bangkok, Thailand in a family of fourteen. Currently one third of his family members live in Atlanta, another third in Pasadena, California and the rest remain in Thailand. He earned his bachelor and master degrees in physics and mathematics and worked in the field of nuclear research for a few years.

He started his career in education at Grady High School as a physics and mathematics teacher. He was science department chairman for five years and later became mathematics department chairman for five more years. He was selected as the Atlanta Public Schools Teacher of the Year and the Georgia Teacher of the Year Finalist in 1997. After 14 years at Grady he joined Mr. Doran and his staff at Inman Middle for almost three years.

Mr. Boonyapat went to work in the central office beginning with the Office of High Schools as a Director of Post Secondary Readiness and later as a Project Administrator for the High School Transformation Initiative sponsored by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation grant. He then joined the Mathematics and Science Department as a Program Administrator working under a General Electric (GE) Foundation grant.

Throughout his career, he served on the Board of Directors for the Association of Teacher Educators in teacher preparation at the state, national and international levels. He also served with the Georgia Department of Education as an advisory expert to develop the Georgia Performance Standards (GPS) for mathematics and science. He is a member of various professional organizations such as ASCD, NCTM, NSTA, NSDC, etc.
