Culture & Belonging
Drew Charter School does not shy away from the work of equity—as we begin our next quarter century, we are leaning in more boldly than ever. We are deepening our efforts to understand and celebrate the complexities and nuances of culture. We’re committed to fostering a school environment where every student, family, and staff member feels a true sense of belonging.
Our Office of Culture and Equity builds on Drew’s investment in equitable education in the East Lake neighborhood since 2000. We take an intentional approach to creating a school culture that meaningfully includes and celebrates all members of our community.
We center equity through efforts to expand cultural competency and belonging in all aspects of our work. We bring a multicultural lens to our curriculum and programming, ensuring that students learn and thrive in a space where their identities are affirmed and their experiences respected. We maintain the belief that when we live out these values through professional development for educators and open conversations with families, we collectively help to raise culturally informed, empathetic, and empowered learners.
Terra Gay, the Managing Director of Culture and Equity, Angela Cleveland, Culture and Equity Specialist and Sherrie Charles, Family Liaison make up our team. In partnership with staff, families, and students, the team focuses on building meaningful family engagement touchpoints and community connections, and expanding opportunities that foster belonging for all students.
We invite everyone in our community to be part of this ongoing and essential work. If you have questions, want to learn more, or would like to get involved, please reach out to Terra Gay at terra.gay@drewcharterschool.org or connect with your academy principal or dean to explore ways to support Drew’s efforts.
Drew Board of Directors Commitment to Equity Statement
