Drew Reopening Update - December 15, 2020

Dear Drew Families,

We have almost made it to the end of the second quarter!  We are only days away from our students, families, and staff taking a well-deserved Winter Break.

As we prepare for the holiday recess, I want to again thank you for the resilience and flexibility shown since we opened the school year this past August.  We appreciate the tremendous sacrifices and adjustments you have personally made to support your student in our virtual learning environment amid the challenges the pandemic has brought us all.

I also want to update you on Drew’s reopening plans following winter break.  Drew will reopen under a full-virtual model on January 5th for all students.   As the first day back for students is also a runoff election day in Georgia, we will operate under an alternate schedule on January 5th to provide flexibility for staff and parents to vote.  While the instructional day will start at the normal time that morning, there will be no live instruction for students in the afternoon. Teachers will post January 5th schedules in Google Classroom on January 4th. Wednesday, January 6th, will be a full scale instructional day, and we will resume Wellness Wednesdays on January 13th.  Wellness Wednesdays will continue to represent a combination of wellness and academic opportunities throughout the school year.  Academy principals will provide additional details regarding updates to the Wellness Wednesday format.

While Atlanta Public Schools has announced transitioning to a hybrid model with some face-to-face learning on January 25th, Drew will not transition at that time and will remain virtual.  However, on January 25th, Drew may expand targeted in-person interventions for highly vulnerable students.

In January, Drew will provide an update regarding a potential transition in February to a hybrid instructional model with face-to-face learning.   In making our decision to transition, please know that we are continually observing public health data/trends, learning from other schools and districts, and remaining ever mindful of the social and emotional well-being of our students, families, and staff members.   We are also actively gathering invaluable input from staff and families.

We are grateful for your ongoing understanding in this decision making process.  Please anticipate another update in January.  Until then, we wish you and your family a safe, healthy, and rejuvenating winter break.  May peace fill your days during this season!

For the Love of Drew,

Peter McKnight
