Dear Drew Parents/Guardians:

I hope that you are safe and well.  Earlier this evening, Atlanta Public Schools (APS) announced that the district will begin the 2020–2021 school year in a virtual learning model and move the district start date from August 10th to August 24th.  The superintendent recommended a virtual model from the first day of school through at least October 23rd and based this recommendation on current public health data showing substantial spread of COVD-19 in Atlanta.

APS, as our charter authorizer, has advised us to align our reopening model with the district in order to ensure the safety of students and staff.  Based on this guidance and our consideration of public health data, Drew will also reopen virtually on August 3rdWe will continue to collaborate with the district to review public health data/guidelines on an ongoing basis to determine if we will continue under a virtual model or shift to a hybrid or a face-to-face model later in the school year.

This has been a very difficult decision to make, and it is with mixed emotions that we communicate this information to you.  It is our desire as educators to return to a traditional school environment where we can engage with students directly and our students can benefit from face-to-face interaction with friends, classmates, and teachers.  However, we also realize that bringing students and staff together in that manner may not be safe and is currently not in the best interest of public health.

To ensure that your student is successful in our virtual model, we are requiring all families to complete the following Technology Survey by Thursday, July 16th (You must complete this survey even if you previously completed a reopening survey.):

Virtual Technology Survey

(Completing this survey by the deadline will allow us to address any technology or device needs for your student before the first day of school.)

Later this week, we will email you a brief video outlining Drew’s Virtual Reopening Model. We will also share information about upcoming virtual academy town hall meetings.

We will forge ahead in our remote environment intent on engaging students in high quality learning.  Also, more than ever, we are focused on removing barriers to engagement and ensuring that students’ needs are met.  Finally, even as we reconvene virtually, we are committed to building community among our students, families and staff.  Please know that Drew stands ready to receive, inspire and educate your student in the new year.  Stay well and stay encouraged!

For the Love of Drew,

Peter McKnight
